DJI launches the Osmo Action 4

DJI launches the Osmo Action 4, a minor upgrade at a high price

DJI has just introduced the Osmo Action 4, a new action camera with which it intends not to lose track of GoPro. The first thing to note is that it doesn’t change much compared to Action 3, which launched in September 2022, and not just in looks. However, it comes with an interesting novelty: the inclusion of a larger photographic sensor.

The Osmo Action 4 boasts a 1/1.3-inch sensor, versus its predecessor’s 1/1.7-inch. The camera improvements are aimed primarily at capturing content in low-light conditions. Something that stands out is the inclusion of D-Log M, a technology that promises to drastically optimize the dynamic range of the device.

Here we can say that the big changes that DJI has planned for the Osmo Action 4 are over when comparing it directly with the Action 3. The camera maintains identical features to its predecessor, both when it comes to performance and specifications.

Although the sensor is larger, the camera maintains an aperture of f/2.8 and a viewing angle of 155 degrees. While video recording remains limited to 4K at 120 frames per second. As a curious fact, DJI has decided to slightly cap the maximum photo and video resolution of the Osmo Action 4 compared to last year’s model.

Images can now be up to 3648 x 2736 pixels, when the Action 3 could capture up to 4000 x 3000 pixels. When recording video under the 4:3 aspect ratio, the maximum resolution is 3840 x 2880 pixels, versus the previous 4096 x 3072 pixels.

Few relevant changes for the DJI Osmo Action 4

Another section in which no changes are seen in the Osmo Action 4 is in the battery. The new DJI camera once again incorporates a 1770 mAh battery, which promises up to 160 minutes of operating time, and a recharging system that allows you to recover up to 80% of the energy in just 18 minutes.

As we said at the beginning, the aesthetics of the new action camera are identical to those of its predecessor. In fact, it reintroduces the power button on the side—which allows you to quickly switch between modes—and the recording button on the top. As for touch screens, it offers a 1.4-inch front with a resolution of 320 x 320 pixels and a 2.25-inch rear (360 x 640).

The Osmo Action 4 also features the magnetic tethering system we saw on the 2022 model and once again boasts DJI’s image stabilization technologies. In the latter case, it offers support for the already-known HorizonSteadyHorizonBalancing, and RockSteady 3.0, as well as the new version Rocksteady 3.0+.

Where there is a slight improvement compared to Action 3 is in water resistance. The DJI Osmo Action 4 is waterproof to 18 meters without a protective case, about 2 meters more than its predecessor. In the case of using a protector, it can be taken up to 60 meters deep.

Of course, the new DJI action camera can expand its functions through the mobile app of the Chinese brand. While it maintains the option of using it to broadcast video in Full HD (1080p) quality. On the other hand, it maintains compatibility with a wide catalog of third-party accessories —such as those from GoPro—, although the manufacturer also offers an important selection of its own proposals.

Price and availability

We have made it clear that, beyond the benefits of its larger photographic sensor, the DJI Osmo Action 4 is a minor upgrade compared to the Action 3. However, the new model arrives on the market with a significant price increase in compared to last year’s version.

Its predecessor was launched on the market in exchange for 359 euros for the standard version, but the Action 4 starts at 429 euros . A significant rise and that is also transferred to the rest of the packages that DJI offers.

The Osmo Action 4 Adventure Pack —which includes 2 batteries, a multifunctional case for them, and a 1.5-meter extendable arm— costs 529 euros . While other alternatives available with their respective accessories are:

  • Surf pack: 448 euros;
  • Diving pack: 498 euros;
  • Motorcycling and mountain biking pack: 499 euros;
  • Road cycling pack: 508 euros;
  • Hiking pack: 516 euros.

All these options, with their corresponding details, are already available in the official DJI store. There you can also purchase other vital elements for the operation of the Osmo Action 4—such as microSD cards—and individual accessories separately.
